We hear about the love of God all the time, but what is this thing called love anyway? How does it act or react? Is it something you fall into or do you choose to love? If you were to ask 100 different people, you would probably end up with 100 different answers. Our ideas of love are often vague or warped. The Word of God brings out the Truth of what real love is.
"God is love." 1 John 4:16
Love is not something God has as one of His qualities. The Being of God is love. Everything He is and does flows from the river of the love of God. It is then impossible to define real love apart from God. Outside of God there may be genuine affection, but there can never be genuine love.
Any study of God is automatically a study of love and a study of genuine love is a study of God. Just as it is impossible to know everything there is know about God, so it is impossible to know or experience everything there is about love. Love is a growing experience and it will continually grow and develop throughout eternity - for those who choose to experience God's love in Salvation now.
Where do we start our understanding of love and God? In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul gives us 13 Points of the love of God. These lessons will examine these 13 points of God's love in 3 ways:
1. How God Loves Us
2. How We Are To Love God
3. How We Are To Love Each Other
Here are the 13 Points of the love of God found in 1 Corinthians 13 as given in the Phillips Version:
"This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience - it looks for a way of being constructive. It is not possessive; it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance. Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it shares the joy of those who live by truth. Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope, it can outlast anything. Love never fails."
