In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Eph. 6:16, NIV
The shield of faith is an essential part of the armour of God that we are to put on. It prevents the arrows that satan shoots at us from reaching our body. It keeps us safe in the battles of life.
No competent solider learns how to use a weapon in the middle of a battle. They diligently practice using their weapons and equipment before they get anywhere near a fight. David refused to use untested weapons [the sword/armour of Saul], but instead went to meet Goliath with what he knew how to use competently. Likewise, we should know how to use our spiritual weapons [although we will always be learning] before the heat of battle.
So how do we practice raising the vital defensive piece of armour: the Shield of Faith? In her book, Believe God, Beth Moore suggests repeating the following five statements every day until they become a natural part of who you are. One [or more] of these statements will extinguish any flaming arrow the enemy may shoot at you. Be familiar with them and be ready to raise them up at the appropriate time.
Throughout Scripture God tells us Who He is. We have to believe, even in the face of what appears to be contrary “evidence” that He has told us the Truth. Any thought that comes to us that would cast doubt on the character of God needs to be met with this confident statement.
God has made great promises, including being a place of safety and protection. When we feel that the enemy is overrunning us and we are being overwhelmed or when we are facing an “impossible” situation that we cannot see a way through, we need to confidently make this statement of faith. God has no limits. He will fulfil His promises. He will be with us at all times.
Learn who God says you are in Christ. When the enemy attacks with thoughts of being a failure, being weak, being unlovable or whatever hold up this statement. If it is not who God has declared you to be, then it is a lie. God created you. He redeemed you. He has seen everything in your life. You are who God says you are. Period.
When you are feeling weak or confused, when you think you can’t go on, remember that God will never give you anything that He, through Christ in your life, cannot handle. Arrows of fear, failure and discouragement can bounce off of this statement. You have never failed…until you give up. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Through Christ you will make it!
The eternal Word of God has been birthed in you and is growing more powerful every day. What defeated you in the past, will not defeat you in the future. You are growing and maturing. The living Word is infusing you with the life of God. When doubts attack, lift up this Word of faith.
Practice these statements every day - out loud or silently. Let your mind dwell on them until they become part of your nature. Mrs. Moore suggests counting them off on your fingers as you say them. When you are in the battle repeat and mediate on these statements [or the statement that is particularly appropriate] and their implications. God does not lie. If you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour, each one of these statements is TRUE about YOU.
